Our campaign aims to raise awareness of how to prevent tick bites and how to safely remove ticks. We also explain the importance of early treatment for people who become unwell with Lyme disease, following a bite.
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection, usually caused by the bite of an infected tick. Ticks can be found in every county across the UK and can be as small as poppy seeds, so easily missed. If you spend a lot of time outdoors or own a pet, you may be at higher risk of being bitten.
Raising awareness of Lyme disease is very important, as late diagnosis or misdiagnosis can lead to serious long-term health problems, including neurological and cardiac issues.

How to take part
Whether you’re a member of the public, an outdoor organisation, or a Lyme disease patient, there are many ways you can help to raise awareness this May.
1. Update your profile picture and share our social media posts
We would love for you to follow us and share our posts on social media – it’s an amazing tool for raising awareness far and wide! Our Social Media Toolkit explains how to update your profile picture during May to show your support, and offers everything you’ll need to create a real buzz online!
Looking for inspiration? A great way to start is to share our tick bite prevention post on Facebook.

2. Share our awareness materials
Our awareness posters, leaflets, and tick cards can be downloaded and shared via email, social media, or newsletter. They can also be printed off at home.
Limited hard copies of awareness packs are available and will be sent out from late April (1 per household).

3. Wear Lime For Lyme
Wear Lime For Lyme Day kick-started our campaign on Friday 1st May. A big thank you to everyone who joined in with their pets to celebrate by dressing in lime green! Thank you also to everyone who encouraged their office, school, or hobby group to take part too!
We offer a wide range of green clothing options in our LDUK online shop so you can continue to raise awareness of Lyme disease throughout May and beyond!
We’ve also listed some ideas for dogs and other pets below! If wearing green just isn’t for you, our lapel pins, Be Tick Aware mugs and other accessories make great treats and allow you to show your support.

Pet owners may be at increased risk of tick bites so it’s important to check for and protect pets against ticks.

4. Get together to raise awareness and funds!
Why not organise a meet-up, coffee morning or bake sale with friends, family, a local group or at your workplace? Hosting an event is a fun way to raise funds and awareness! There are some great ideas on our fundraising page.
Take a look at our downloadable posters, cake flags, donation jar labels, invitations and bunting. A great help in making your event a success!
You can order our awareness information for a fundraising or awareness event and we will post this out to you for free! Don’t forget, we can also send you a free selfie frame, running vest, and fundraising bucket to help you look the part and make your day really special!
5. Take part in Light Up For Lyme
Every May, buildings and landmarks across the UK and Ireland recognise Lyme Disease Awareness Month by lighting up in green.
We’ve seen some really iconic sites Light Up For Lyme over the years! From Tower 42 and Blackpool Tower, to The Kelpies, Cardiff Castle, Alexandra Palace, and Ashton Gate Stadium – we’ve been so delighted that so many venues have helped to raise awareness!
Why not check out our list of confirmed light-ups to see if there is one near you? We’ll keep this list updated as new venues sign up.
Where possible, we’d love for you to attend a local light-up (from 8pm) to take some great photos, and share these on your social media channels. Light-up photos can be really striking and a great way to raise awareness.
Don’t forget to send them to us to promote on our social media channels and website! Remember to use the following hashtags when you share any photos on your social media.

6. Share your patient story with the press or media
If you’re a Lyme disease patient and want to help raise awareness, one of the most powerful ways we can do this is by sharing our stories with the press and media. Together, we could reach millions with our vital messages.
Please send your Lyme patient story to our Press and Community Outreach Manager, Julia Knight. We can help you to edit your story, add key facts, and provide images of ticks and tick remover tools.
7. Write to your GP, pharmacist, or other health professionals
Please write to your GP, pharmacist, or other health professionals and ask them to take the RCGP e-learning course on Lyme disease.
You could also ask if they’d be open to displaying our awareness materials which they can order via this form.

8. Write to your MP
Reach out to your local MP and share our MP Briefing Document with them to help their constituents Be Tick Aware.
9. Take part in our campaign for schools
We would be thrilled if schools would take part in our Be Tick Aware campaign! Tick awareness activities can be incorporated into lesson planning and assemblies.
If you’re a parent of a school-aged child, you can also help! Please share the link to our information for schools with your child’s school and encourage them to take part. This provides everything they need to know to get involved!
